APEC Member Economies Unanimously Approve TRUSTe’s Renewal as Accountability Agent for Cross Border Privacy Rules System

January 27, 2015

TRUSTe’s request for renewal as an Accountability Agent for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Cross Border Privacy Rules (CBPR) System has been unanimously approved by the 21 APEC member Economies.

Being an Accountability Agent, TRUSTe will continue to review, certify, monitor and enforce the privacy practices of participating U.S.-based companies or subsidiaries to ensure compliance with the CBPR system.

“It is important that TRUSTe continues to support businesses in meeting global requirements for safe data transfer, while also ensuring that the customer’s personal information is kept safe,” says TRUSTe CEO Chris Babel. “The APEC program serves as a key part in building trust in the data economy, while expanding businesses internationally with established privacy regulations.”

The APEC Privacy Program is made for businesses that collect personally identifiable information from consumers and transfer that information between economies within the APEC region participating in the Cross Border Privacy Rules (CBPR) Framework. With APEC Privacy Certification both online and offline data collection practices of businesses are certified as being in compliance with the CBPR Framework.

TRUSTe was named the first accountability agent for APEC Cross Border Privacy compliance in June 2013.
